What are the Causes & Dangers of Potholes

Road safety should never be compromised. We at Clayton Concrete Pumping & Backhoe are strong advocates of better roads and concrete for both private and public purposes in the State of Oklahoma. One of the biggest hindrances in achieving this is potholes. In fact, it was tallied that six billion dollars are spent on automobile repair and medical treatments caused by potholes.

What is a Pothole?

A pothole is usually a large cavity on the road formed by erosion, wear and tear, and various natural activities. You can immediately spot one when the pavement or concrete can no longer bear the weight of the load above ground brought by the ruptured hole. The term originated from 15th century England wherein potters would dig ruts on the road in order to gather raw clay. This caused a lot of turmoil as the holes would cause accidents among coaches, wagons, and horses back in the day.

What Causes Potholes?

The most common cause is that it resulted in the combination of water and traffic. When the pavement cracks, moisture from the rain and snow will enter and loosen the soil underneath. Even after drying up from the heat, the road beneath has already expanded and elevated, no longer returning to its original solid state. When the foundation becomes weak and loose, it can no longer bear the heavy traffic that will pass through, resulting in erosion and potholes.

Pothole Dangers

Thousands of accidents caused by potholes among automobiles, motorcycles, pedestrians, and road workers are being recorded every year. These ruts do not only damage the appearance of roads and pavements of neighborhoods, they also bring higher risk every time they are not being fixed immediately.

A small pothole can cause people to trip over or bicycles to get damaged, while larger ones can lead cars to swerve or drivers to lose control and lead to a potentially fatal accident. This is why we at Clayton Concrete Pumping & Backhoe strongly encourage everyone to act fast if there is one near their homes or business.
